Can you imagine growing up under a brutal military occupation?Surviving in spite of this is resistance to occupation.
Widad was born in the Jenin refugee camp, and she was always a doer. She started her own sewing shop to earn a living after leaving school. She did not own land, so her family did not have olives, other crops, or real food security. Then she joined the Burqin Women's cooperative of the Palestine Fair Trade Association (PFTA) in 2009. The coop makes maftoul (couscous), grinds za'atar, shells almonds, and sun-dries tomatoes, products that are then sold to Canaan Fair Trade to be exported to the world, breaking the enforced isolation of the occupation.
Widad also runs a small chicken hatchery, and she started a bank for women like herself. The bank now has 145 members and has been so successful she started a second one. Widad's leadership qualities are evident as she insists on life in spite of the hostile military occupation. She rose to the head of her cooperative and was twice elected to the Board of PFTA's 1,700 members.
When asked what people in the United States can do to support her, she says: “Buy more couscous. You will create a market and Canaan will buy more, and we can expand our cooperative to more members. We want to work, and that will help us most of all.”
