Human Rights Watch reported the story of a Palestinian boy with leukemia who suffered attacks as a result of his illness at his school in the Lebanese Bekaa Governorate.
Rasha, the mother of the 12-year-old child, says that her son's medicine and treatment made it difficult for him to concentrate, and instead of helping him, the school staff scolded him and verbally insulted him and assaulted him physically.
According to Rasha, the teacher of "Fadi" (a pseudonym for the child) tightened his hair and called him names like foolish or donkey, and forced him to stand outside in the cold as punishment. When Rasha complained to the school principal - whom Fadi said she also pulled his hair in violent manner – The Principal asked her to move him to an institution for children with disabilities. The mom said her son has a serious medical condition, not a disability.
The mother said that Fadi was in a state of severe headache, "and when it hits the boy the principal calls the mom and says do not bring Fadi here again."
The director of the school - in a local television interview – said that Fadi have to move to another institution, and his appearance as a result of his chemical treatment "bothers other children." Despite all this, Rasha says, no one from the ministry followed her, and the abuse continued.
According to Human Rights Watch, physical abuse of students is rampant in Lebanon, although it has become illegal since the 1970s. In a new report, "I don’t want my son to get hit," the organization's researchers spoke to 51 children as well as parents, teachers and educational activists about what was going on in the country's schools and found levels of human rights violations.
Residents told Human Rights Watch that their children were beaten with sticks and other instruments, beaten on the face and dragged from under the offices where they tried to avoid beatings, to hit again.
