From Cuba to Vietnam and Oman .. America, Iran and the art of making wars

The issue of the attack on oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman brought to the fore a case of previous crises in which the United States accused specific countries of managing them, before Washington was discovered to ignite its first spark.

Early Thursday morning, two oil tankers were attacked in the Gulf of Oman near the Strait of Hormuz. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was quick to accuse Iran of being behind the attack.

Pompeo said the Washington assessment was based on "intelligence and other information on weapons used," adding that the level of expertise required to carry out such operations "is similar to the level of recent attacks by Iran against a number of ships," referring to the attacks in Fujairah last May Iran has also denied responsibility.

But Iran has accused what it called regional and international parties to adopt "sabotage diplomacy." Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said in a tweet on Twitter that America's claims against Iran without proof of the Gulf of Oman attacks show that the B Group, which includes Bolton and Mohammed Bin Zayed, Mohammed bin Salman and Netanyahu, moves to the "alternative plan of sabotage diplomacy"

The Iranian mission to the United Nations also said that Tehran "categorically rejects the unfounded American claim on the attack on two oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman, and condemns it in the strongest terms."

This mysterious attack, which comes amid an unprecedented tension in the Gulf region and the escalation of the crisis between Iran and the United States, brings to the fore similar events that have led to similar crises, most notably the Gulf of Tonkin incident in Vietnam and the Bay of Pigs incident in Cuba. That the United States had provoked them to justify military operations.

Tonkin Bay
On August 2, 1964, the American destroyer Maddox carried out espionage missions to gather intelligence off the coast of North Vietnam overlooking the waters of the Gulf of Tonkin, when US and Western media reported that the US destroyer had been fired from the Vietnamese coast and the destroyer Vietnamese.

Two days after the accident, the destroyer "Maddox" backed by the destroyer "Sea Turner Joy", fired heavily and destroyed targets on the coast of North Vietnam, in conjunction with aerial bombardment by US warplanes under the pretext of a new Vietnamese attack.

Immediately following this process, the US Congress passed the "Tonkin Gulf" bill, which gave Republican President Lyndon Johnson a clear mandate to exercise all the necessary measures to repel the US aggression in the Gulf, which erupted after the Vietnam War.

Although the US report claimed responsibility for North Vietnam, doubts remained about this incident, until a 2005 report by the US National Security Agency confirmed that there had been no attack from North Vietnam on 4 August 1964.

In a documentary entitled "The Fog of War," introduced in 2003, former US Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara admitted that the second attack on August 4, 1964 never happened, and that the US administration invented it to continue the confrontation.

Bay of Pigs
The volatile Vietnam Bay operation preceded the Gulf Bay crisis in Cuba, a crisis that was considered the first real confrontation that put the world on the brink of a global nuclear war.

The invasion of the Bay of Pigs dates back to March 17, 1960, when US President Eisenhower gave his approval to a proposal by the US intelligence service to provide support to the Cuban opposition - mainly made up of Cubans fleeing their country following Castro's takeover of power - Communist Castro.

In January 1961, John Kennedy took over from Eisenhower in the United States, and in February gave orders to carry out the invasion on the ground.

On April 15, 1961, the operation began with an aerial bombardment by US-led aircraft led by Cuban rebels targeting Cuban air bases and followed by a ground attack on April 17. The attack was met with fierce resistance from the Cuban armed forces, In April 1961 the operation ended with a terrible failure.

Following the failed operation, Castro agreed with the Soviets to deploy medium-range Soviet ballistic missiles on Cuban territory. This alarmed the US administration, which responded by imposing a naval blockade on Cuba to prevent Soviet cargo ships from carrying weapons.

The crisis ended in two weeks with a peaceful solution when Moscow ordered the withdrawal of its nuclear-capable missiles from Cuba following Washington's review of the force and its threat to use it "preventively" if necessary.
