Israel expels 700 Palestinians from their home - without compensation

Israel's Supreme Court has decided to allow the displacement of over 700 Palestinians from their homes in Silwan, East Jerusalem.

Now these Palestinians are waiting to be driven out to be replaced by Jewish settlers. At least two families have already been homeless since Israel began demolishing several houses in Silwan.

On November 21, the Supreme Court rejected a Palestinian petition filed to prevent their homes and land from being expropriated by the Israeli state to be given to Jews.

The refusal gave a green light to the radical Israeli settlement organization Ateret Cohanim (Etrethe Priests) to begin the displacement of at least 70 families from their homes.

Ather Cohanim claims that Silwan, a Palestinian and Arab housing estate, until 1938 was a Jewish, Yemeni residential area. Israeli laws allow "Jewish land" to be returned to the former owners. Ownership is attributed to the Jewish breed collectively, not any other individuals.

The Supreme Court freely interprets the laws
During the Ottoman Empire's rule in 1899, a Jewish cartel owned properties in Silwan. This is now used as a legal pretext for expropriating both the land and the home of the Palestinians concerned.

Spokesmen for the Palestinian families in Silwan have pointed out that the "Jewish Foundation" owned only properties during the Ottoman era, not the land. It is proved by the fact that the land itself did not have private owners. The houses that then existed in the district no longer exist. Therefore, they mean, there is not even support for expropriation in Israeli law. But Israel's Supreme Court has now made an interpretation of the law.

No compensation is awarded to the affected Palestinians for the ethnic cleansing and demolition of their house in Silwan.
