Japanese police arrested two Israeli men on Wednesday for smuggling 200 kg of gold worth 924 million yen (8.42 million dollars) from Hong Kong to Japan in November 2017, according to news reports.
The Chiba prefectural police suspect the two men may have smuggled 20 billion yen ($ 183.5 million) worth of gold into 50 rounds since March 2017, the state-owned Japan Broadcasting Corporation reported.
The 58-year-old and 55-year-olds also head companies in Tokyo but did not disclose the names of the companies. One of them admitted the charges, while the other denied the charges.
The two Jewish men were living in Tokyo and were also being held for violating Japan's customs law because they had smuggled gold as parts of Hong Kong cars with tax evasion, the Tokyo News Agency reported.
